FR Student Wins Macy’s Bob Hope Band Award Eric Tarosky, senior Drum Major in the Franklin Regional High School Band, was presented the Bob Hope Scholarship Award during the band’s participation in the 2009 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
Through submission of a written essay, each band director in the parade is expected to nominate one student who best reflects the values and attributes that Bob Hope represented to millions of Americans, both at home and overseas. These values and attributes include musical ability, leadership initiative, sense of humor, and a strong commitment to community service. Members of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Band Selection Committee evaluate the essays and select the winning recipient.
Eric received a scholarship award from the Bob and Dolores Hope Charitable Foundation. In addition, the Franklin Regional Band also received an award.
The surprise announcement was made at a final meeting for band directors on the Tuesday evening before the parade in New York. Wesley Whatley, Creative Manager for the Macy’s Parade and Entertainment Group, read a letter from Linda Hope, Bob’s daughter, expressing Linda’s sentiments to Eric that he “is just the kind of person my father would have loved to meet.” Eric plans to attend Penn State University with majors in English and Political Science, hoping to eventually attend law school.
